
Mastering is the last step between a finished mix and a released track. The mastering engineer takes the stereo mix as one object and adjusts its tone, dynamics, loudness, and stereo balance so it holds up on every playback system, then produces the exact files each destination needs. On an album, it is also the work that makes a dozen separately mixed songs sound like one record.
The word comes from the master: the single authoritative copy that every other copy is made from. The streaming transcode, the vinyl lacquer, the CD glass master, the file your distributor ingests, all of them are generated from that one file. Mastering is the work of making that copy correct, because nothing downstream can improve on it.
In practice it is a small number of decisions applied across the entire track at once. That constraint is the whole character of the job: a mastering engineer usually moves things by 0.5 to 2 dB, not by 10, because anything larger drags every element in that frequency range along with it.

The line matters commercially, not just technically. A mix problem cannot be solved in mastering. If the vocal is buried, no EQ across the whole file will lift it without bringing every other midrange element up with it. That is why an honest mastering engineer's first answer is sometimes "go back to the mix", and why quoting mastering as a fix for a mix you are unsure about is a fast route to unpaid revision rounds.
The chain varies with the material, but the order barely does. Corrective work comes before creative work, and limiting always comes last, because everything ahead of it changes what the limiter has to do.
Every major streaming platform normalizes playback. A master louder than the platform's target is simply turned down on the listener's device, which means the extra loudness you bought with limiting is gone but the dynamics you spent to get it are not coming back.

Most of the friction in a mastering job is created before the file is sent. Six things remove nearly all of it.

A single track is usually a few hours of focused work, and independent engineers commonly quote two to five business days with one or two revision rounds included. Published rates for independent mastering typically sit in the $50 to $150 per song range, with established rooms charging several times that. Album work is priced per track at a discount, because tonal and level matching across the record is one job done once rather than ten jobs done in a row.
For demos, sync drafts, and client references, yes. For a release you are charging money for, the two real obstacles are monitoring and fatigue. You cannot judge low end you cannot hear, and you cannot hear a mix objectively an hour after mixing it. If you do master your own work, do it on another day, at a fixed listening level, against references you did not make.
Automated mastering services are a reasonable third option when turnaround matters more than the last five percent. They apply a competent generic curve quickly. What they will not do is tell you the mix has a problem, which is often the most valuable thing a mastering engineer says.
If the track is going to DJs or a distributor that wants key and tempo metadata, tag it before it leaves. Getting the key and BPM right on the delivered file saves a round of emails and stops the track being beatmatched against the wrong thing.
Master, then deliver. Once the file is right, put it in a private Room instead of a shared folder: the client streams it in lossless from any phone, approves it in one tap, and the download unlocks when the invoice is settled. The last mile of a mastering job is getting paid for it.
